Erdogan praises Eurofighter jets agreement with UK

(MENAFN) Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday praised a major agreement with the UK to purchase 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, calling the $11-billion deal a new emblem of defence cooperation between the two countries.

“We regard this step as a new symbol of the strategic relations between our two close allies,” Erdogan said following the signing ceremony with visiting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Ankara’s presidential palace.

Turkey has been seeking to modernize its air force, aiming to acquire up to 40 European-made fighter jets produced collaboratively by Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Erdogan also expressed gratitude to the leaders of the consortium countries for their “constructive approach.” Negotiations accelerated after Germany lifted its veto on the sale in July, following Turkey’s firm stance on the Gaza conflict.

Starmer highlighted the strategic and economic benefits of the deal, stating, “At the heart of this is our agreement today that the UK will provide Turkey with 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, with the option to provide more in the future.” He added that the acquisition would “bolster security across NATO, deepen our bilateral defence cooperation, and boost economic growth here and in the United Kingdom, securing 20,000 British jobs, building these state-of-the-art fighter jets. That is something to celebrate. I am proud that British Typhoons will form a vital part of the Turkish air force for many years to come, as you defend NATO's south-eastern flank for the good of all.”
