Activist protests Germany’s Gaza policy in parliament

(MENAFN) A pro-Palestinian activist disrupted a German parliamentary debate on Wednesday by unfurling a Palestinian flag to protest Germany’s policy on Gaza.

The demonstration occurred during Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul’s address on the fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The protester shouted that no ceasefire exists, criticizing Israel’s alleged violations of the truce that resulted in hundreds of Palestinian deaths, as well as Germany’s perceived inaction.

Deputy Parliament President Omid Nouripour quickly intervened, and three security officers escorted the young man from the visitors’ gallery.

Germany has been a major arms supplier to Israel in recent years. From October 2023 to June 2025, the government approved arms sales totaling over €492 million ($567 million). Chancellor Friedrich Merz, a strong supporter of Israel, imposed restrictions on weapons exports to Israel in August 2025 amid public pressure, halting new approvals for arms potentially used in Gaza.

However, these restrictions were lifted this week.

The German government maintains that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has held since October 10, 2023, and noted ongoing efforts to support sustainable peace and provide humanitarian aid in Gaza.
