Chancellor Merz says US security strategy to shift transatlantic ties
Merz acknowledged regret over US criticisms of European governments in the strategy document, but noted that they were not surprising, as they reflected earlier remarks by US Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference. He also addressed US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Europe’s pro-immigration policies, saying he had discussed Germany’s approach to immigration and asylum law with Trump. Merz highlighted that Germany had halved the number of asylum seekers, and expects that Trump will acknowledge this “course correction” in future discussions.
The new US national security strategy, released last week, emphasized US priorities in the Indo-Pacific while rejecting European characterizations of Russia as an “existential threat.” The 33-page document included sharp observations on Europe, warning of economic decline and a “stark prospect of civilizational erasure” over the next 20 years. It criticized European governments’ stances on EU-skeptical, far-right, and anti-immigration movements.
Breaking from previous US strategy documents, it argued that Europe faces larger issues including EU and transnational activities undermining sovereignty, migration policies causing social strain, censorship and suppression of opposition, declining birthrates, and loss of national identity and self-confidence. Merz’s comments reflect Germany’s cautious approach to maintaining ties with the US amid these critiques.
