Expert warns far-right influence growing in daily life across Germany

(MENAFN) Far-right extremist ideas and organizational networks are increasingly shaping everyday experiences across Germany, according to an assessment by an expert working in the field of countering right-wing extremism.

Romy Arnold, a project manager at a Thuringia-based organization focused on combating far-right extremism, said these ideologies and structures are becoming more visible and entrenched, particularly in economically and structurally disadvantaged regions. She noted that their reach is also expanding among younger generations, according to reports.

Arnold explained that attitudes rooted in dehumanization and neo-Nazi thinking are no longer hidden, but can now be observed openly in public spaces, political institutions, and local communities. “We see that far-right patterns of thought are becoming more widespread,” she said.

She added that the increase in far-right attacks further reflects this trend. Arnold also pointed to the growing electoral success of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, noting that its rising vote share is no longer confined to eastern regions but has spread across the country.

In some areas, she said, neo-Nazi parties continue to secure strong results in local elections, while right-wing combat sports groups, youth organizations, and loosely connected extremist networks are also gaining ground.

“The far right tries to infiltrate every space where people are present. This is particularly evident in structurally weak regions,” Arnold said.

Addressing the reasons behind rising frustration among young people, Arnold cited several contributing factors, including fragile industrial bases, reduced state presence in rural areas, shortcomings within the education system, and a lack of adequate recognition for the burdens placed on young people during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said these conditions have created fertile ground for anger and discontent that far-right actors seek to exploit.
