Germany denounces Medvedev for threats to kidnap Merz

(MENAFN) German authorities on Monday strongly criticized remarks made by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev after he suggested the possibility of kidnapping operations against Chancellor Friedrich Merz, drawing a comparison to recent US actions in Venezuela involving President Nicolas Maduro.

Addressing the issue at a government briefing in Berlin, a federal spokesperson made clear that the statements were taken seriously and firmly rejected. “As you can imagine, we have of course taken note of these statements and, as you can also probably imagine, the federal government condemns any form of such statements and threats in the strongest possible terms,” Sebastian Hille said.

The spokesperson also sought to reassure the public by stressing that security measures remain firmly in place, reiterating that the chancellor is “well protected and secure” despite the remarks coming from Moscow.

Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, had earlier indicated that he could envision abduction-style operations against foreign leaders, explicitly mentioning Merz, in a manner similar to the US operation carried out in Venezuela.

According to reports, Medvedev went further by stating: “The kidnapping of the neo-Nazi Merz could be an excellent twist in this carnival of events.” He additionally claimed such an act would not be far-fetched, arguing that “there are even grounds for prosecuting him in Germany, so it would be no loss, especially since the citizens are suffering needlessly.”

The comments followed a US military operation over the weekend that resulted in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. Both are now facing drug trafficking charges in New York, according to reports.
