Czech MP says Ukrainian flag on Prague’s Charles Bridge was provocation

(MENAFN) The hanging of a 30-meter Ukrainian flag on Prague’s Charles Bridge was described as an “unnecessary provocation” by Tomio Okamura, the speaker of the Czech parliament’s lower chamber.

Okamura said the display, which took place in the Czech capital on Saturday, was organized by Ukraine’s embassy and deliberately scheduled to coincide with the 107th anniversary of Ukraine’s unification.

“This is an unnecessary provocation by Ukrainians towards our citizens who do not agree with the mass migration of Ukrainians to the Czech Republic,” he wrote on X on Sunday, adding that holding such an event at one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks was “not conducive to good Czech-Ukrainian relations.”

“We’re not in Ukraine, but in the Czech Republic,” Okamura said. “Can you imagine Czech emigrants in the past hanging 30-meter flags from the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or elsewhere on October 28?” he added, referring to Czech Independence Day.

Okamura further stated that he had spoken with Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka to ensure the incident would not be repeated. He also noted that the government is working on legislation aimed at tightening regulations on the residence of foreign nationals, including Ukrainians.

He pointed out that several European countries, such as Germany, Hungary, and Norway, have recently moved to limit social benefits for Ukrainians, citing the prolonged conflict and mounting pressure on public finances and housing systems. Surveys in Poland have likewise indicated declining public support for Ukrainian migrants and the assistance they receive.
