Merz Warns of Far-Right Threat During Visit to Slain Politician’s Grave

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the grave of murdered local politician Walter Lübcke on Monday, using the occasion to warn that far-right extremism and politically motivated violence continue to pose a serious danger to democracy.

According to reports, Merz paid tribute to Lübcke ahead of the seventh anniversary of his killing, meeting with his widow Irmgard Braun-Lübcke and other family members during the visit.

“Walter Luebcke was a loving husband and father, a committed Christian Democrat, and a politician respected across party lines,” Merz said in a statement on social media. “This murder must continue to serve as a warning for us,” he said.

Lübcke, who served as district president in Kassel near Frankfurt, was assassinated in 2019 by a neo-Nazi extremist after receiving repeated threats from far-right groups over his public stance supporting refugee policy under then-Chancellor Angela Merkel.

According to reports, Merz shared a photo from the gravesite showing him standing in silence alongside grieving relatives, underscoring the symbolic weight of the remembrance.

He reiterated that political extremism remains an ongoing challenge in Germany and stressed the need to defend democratic values against radicalization and hate-driven violence.
